Map of the District of Maine with New Brunswick & Nova Scotia.
(North America, United States, Canada, New England, Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, St. Lawrence River, Cape Breton).
Issued 1796, Boston by Thomas & Andrews for Jedidiah Morse. Engraved by Amos Doolittle.
Scarce and interesting 18th century American map.
Very early map relating to the state of Maine, depicted here while still a District of Massachusetts. Includes much of maritime Atlantic Canada, including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Cape Breton island. The country outlines are early and primitive, as is the boundary line with New Brunswick.
Map is in poor physical condition and repaired, but still displays a noble appearance. Various old paper repairs on reverse to mend edge tears and complete split down one fold line, etc. Photos capture the overall appearance which is still nice and worthy of display.
A largely unappreciated and under-valued incunable map for 18th century Maine and early American cartography by one of the key engravers of the era.
Sheet measures c. 8 3/8" x 10 1/4".
Printed area measures c. 6 7/8" x 9 1/8".
